Dev Log 0.3 - #11

Hi, it's me, your bamboo eating anim- eh... dev!

I've got quite a few things to share with you all, so let's dive right in. First off, I want to talk about the amount of content planned for this update. Here’s a quick callback to something I mentioned in Dev Log #9:

"... Out of the 12 scenes I originally planned for this first part, I'll be including 11. It's already relatively big for just being one half of Chapter 0.3..."

Right now, I'm considering moving one more scene to the next update, leaving this update with 10 scenes and approximately 19,000 words - which is still quite substantial, in my opinion. On the bright side, I already have two scenes written for the next update!

This brings me to another topic. You guys provide feedback and overall ideas which I appreciate a lot and thank you all for everything! Regarding this, I initially wanted to make "0.3 Part 1" and "0.3 Part 2" but I'm more and more leaning towards 0.3 and 0.4, which would push the initial 0.4 content to 0.5.

Why the change, you ask? Well, if I release a huge "0.3" update split into four parts, it will still appear as just "0.3" - a lower number compared to "0.3/0.4/0.5/0.6," which feels more substantial. For perspective, I could have easily split the "0.2" update into two or even three parts. For now, this is the direction I’m leaning toward, but I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments!

Now, for a quick status update on the game. Out of the 10 scenes planned:

  • Scenes 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, and 8 are done.
  • Scenes 5, 9, and 10, plus the recap, are still in progress.

I'm still unsure on removing the 11th scene entirely, but I’ll keep you updated in future dev logs. I also need to revisit two of the "finished" scenes to add background characters and other details to bring them to life. The render count for this update is currently sitting at around ~630.

I’m excited to share a small achievement: I created my first in-game item! After failing to find anything that fit my needs, I spent the entire yesterday learning how to make my own mods. It was a fun (and slightly crazy) endeavor, but I’m very pleased with the result, and you’ll see it in the update. (Probably not, since it's just an asset which could be there anyway :D)

Thank you all for sticking with me until the end of this update, for reading it, supporting me, providing feedback and overall encouragement! I hope you have a wonderful day/evening and an amazing week ahead! ❤️

Great game! I am looking forward to your next update.

Thank you very much! :)

My own preference is that I appreciate a reliable development life cycle. What I mean is focusing more on having a consistent time between each update rather than the size of those updates. Not sure if that makes sense.

(+5)

It absolutely makes sense and I agree, that's important as well. Smaller consistent updates is what I'm aiming for currently! :)

(+4)

I'd go with a bigger, fuller update that we need to wait a bit longer on. Either way, it's a quality product already and I can't wait for the next parts 😊

(+6)

Thank you very much! :) I'd love to continue going with longer parts as I did for my first two updates, but it's something a big developer can do, not something I can do unfortunately. The fanbase behind the game isn't large enough to sustain the longer wait currently, I've learned a lot about those things over the past year and since I'm not working full time on the game, my update cycle is too big. I hope to get more frequent but smaller updates and get more people to play and enjoy it in the future and maybe at some point I can go back to bigger updates! :)

I really like the game you created and can you add scenes with breast milk?😇

(+2)

Thank you! That's not something I've planned yet, but it might be something that I could implement later on as a choice, not sure about this though, we'll see!

So since u must be a expert at bamboo I got a question. What does it taste like? Is it more like crunchy bread or would u compare it to something else?

(+3)

It's has a quite bamboozling taste, also a little fibrous. Can't complain though, it's nutritious! :D

Sounds good, I don't think I'll ever give it a try so there's more for you. And don't accidentally die on us. U know since pandas are known for being clumsy suicidal :'(

(+3)

Actually, you probably have eaten bamboo and don't realize it. A lot of Asian cuisine has strips of bamboo in it, for example. If you ever order takeout Chinese food or Lao  food and find thin yellow-ish rectangles in the meal, that is bamboo.  Bamboo shoots are very standard.

Oh well interesting to know, since I'm German I don't eat a lot of Asian cuisine. But next time that I do I'll look out for it. *The more you know*

I'm a tough panda, don't worry <3

(+5)

good job in the achievement thing and also don't rush because a slow well drawn, thought game/update is better than big rushed games/updates so take your time your fans will still be here waiting

(+3)

Thank you very much! :) Yeah, I'll go for the smaller well thought update!

(+6)

Brother, the main thing is not to rush. Go at your own pace. Quality comes first. We'll wait.

(+3)

Thank you mate, will do!

(+7)

Congrats on the achievement even if we don't catch it, any growth on the devs part is a plus for the players.

Haha, thank you and sorry! I thought so and didn't go too much into detail. Was just a little excited to share it since it was also some time I spend despite making renders.
